A Social Media Detox: Reclaiming Time and Wellbeing

May 8, 2025

Over a year ago, I decided to step back from social media. This wasn’t a retreat of failure, but an act of much-needed self-love.

If you need someone outside your immediate circle to help you stop holding back and making excuses from living each moment other than exactly how you dreamed - I'm here for it!

For the first time in years, I stopped feeling aligned with my purpose and state of being. My sleep was a mess, my enthusiasm depleted, and my sense of self felt increasingly fragmented. Over a year ago, I decided to step back from social media. This wasn’t a retreat of failure, but an act of much-needed self-love, reclaiming my time and energy for deeper self-exploration and healing.

What did survival mode look like?

It was often those stolen moments after my daughter fell asleep, reaching for my phone, and aiming to ‘do nothing’ through scrolling. Instead of solace, I found myself even more exhausted and disconnected. Adding to this was the lingering impact of being hacked almost two years prior, losing a lifetime of overseas memories and contacts on my Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This fueled a deeper desire to build something more substantial, like this blog, to connect with and empower women on a more meaningful and lasting level.

An attempt to live with my parents and lighten the load as a single mum brought its own set of pressures. There were moments I felt that sting of shame, feeling not where I ‘should’ be according to some invisible timeline. Establishing new routines with a little one and navigating family dynamics presented daily challenges. I saw myself start mirroring the limitations I’d fought to escape. The turning point was seeing how resurfacing old patterns were seeping into my relationship with my daughter.

Yet, within these hurdles, I discovered a profound truth: there is immense power in choosing to pause, reclaim your time with a social media detox, honestly reassess, and begin anew. The past year away from trying to keep up with what’s online has been a season of deep internal growth.

Taking back the 1-2 hours a day I’d typically lose to the scroll meant:

💚 Reclaiming 7+ hours a week to focus on prioritizing my health holistically—practicing presence, exploring new movement practices, and revisiting the spiritual practices that grounded me during my expat adventures. I found calm and strength in modifying my routines.

💚 Breaking the cycle of late-night phone grabs, emotional shopping, and stress from lack of sleep.

💚 Finally taking up surfing (a bucket list item from my twenties!) and being reminded to be more flexible, releasing rigid expectations and embracing the ebb and flow of life as a single mum.

This pause allowed for a re-evaluation of what truly mattered for where I’m at now, owning my choices—the ultimate power we each have:

🙌 Reclaiming my wellbeing on another level to wake up early again, healing old wounds and triggers.

🙌 As a mum, I felt the weight of wanting my pre-baby routine and life back, and this detox allowed me to come into acceptance of my additional role as a mum 24/7.

🙌 Seeing that moving at a slower pace doesn’t mean failure if you remain consistent.

🙌 Only having more of the right, uplifting, supportive and productive conversations.

🙌 Thanks to seeking a coach, it brought a significant shift in my niche and realizing my passion is in supporting women to show up despite any less than ideal circumstances—even if their families or friends don’t always understand. 💖

If you’ve ever felt like you’re falling behind, please know you are not alone.

My journey of stepping back from social media taught me the power of pausing can be exactly what you need to quiet your ego, clear your mind and focus on what’s important to you. By prioritizing my wellbeing, embracing new experiences, and accepting my role as a mum, I found renewed strength and purpose. Preferring to spend more time on myself, with my daughter or being of service 1:1. If you’ve found yourself overwhelmed, struggling to have time or energy, remember that sometimes the most courageous and productive thing you can do is grant yourself grace to reconnect with what nourishes your soul.

If any part of my story resonates with your own experiences, I see you! You’re doing the best you can, with what you’ve got and what you know – you’re ever evolving!
