If you need someone outside your immediate circle to help you stop holding back and making excuses from living each moment other than exactly how you dreamed - I'm here for it!

Happiness is a journey that begins within. I’ve learned that true happiness doesn’t come from external sources but from our own mindset and choices. In this post, I’ll share insights and strategies to help you cultivate happiness in your life.

Understanding Happiness

I used to have a bucketload of insecurities and looked to others to define my happiness. It wasn’t until I actively sought activities to support my health and navigated new ways of life that I realized happiness is an internal state. While others can contribute to our happiness, the feeling itself comes from within. E.g. Being in love is a feeling that originates inside us, even if someone else loves us back. You can lose that feeling for someone if you feel you’ve outgrown them or have different values. Even if that person says they love you and wants to be together, it’s ultimately a choice and emotion that comes from within you.

The Experience vs. Remembered Self

Imagine a night out with friends. You’re having a great time—laughing, singing, dancing—until someone spills a drink on you. The experienced self lives in the moment, savoring the joy and excitement of what’s happening right now. It’s the part of us that dances, laughs, and enjoys life as it unfolds, so you might brush off the spill and continue having fun.

On the other hand, the remembered self reflects on past experiences, often focusing on specific details that can overshadow the overall joy. When you recall the event later, you might fixate on the spill, overshadowing the fun you had. Understanding these two selves helps us realize how our perceptions shape our happiness, highlighting the importance of focusing on the positive aspects of our experiences.

Three Key Mindsets for Happiness:

  1. This Too Shall Pass: Life is a rollercoaster, and while nothing is permanent, it’s important to honor your emotions. When facing challenges, remind yourself that “this too shall pass.” Acknowledge that something may be difficult or not ideal, and allow yourself to feel those emotions. Whether it’s a day, a week, or longer, give yourself the space to grieve and process. Once you’ve allowed yourself that time, choose to embrace the present moment and take actionable steps to find peace. Engage in activities that bring you joy, like dancing to your favorite song or spending time with loved ones. Remember, happiness is a choice, and taking action is crucial, especially when you don’t feel like it. That’s when it’s most important to push forward.
  2. It’s Not All-Encompassing: Problems don’t have to define your entire life. While living abroad, I heard countless stories of resilience and success against the odds. Just because some people view the world negatively doesn’t mean you have to. Embrace a mindset of abundance and possibility. For instance, Airbnb started as a simple idea after two guys who couldn’t pay rent, decided to rent out air mattresses in their living room, and it grew into a global success. Your circumstances don’t have to limit your potential or happiness.
  3. The World Isn’t Against You: It’s easy to feel like the world is out to get you, but this mindset can hold you back. Instead, view challenges as opportunities to level up your thought processes and improve less-than-ideal situations. For example, consider how you might turn a career setback into a chance to learn new skills or how a personal challenge could strengthen your resilience. When you stop taking things personally, you can use setbacks to propel yourself forward. This shift in perspective allows you to trust others, seek help, and ultimately experience consistent happiness.

Taking Action

Reflecting on these mindsets is important, but action is essential. Start by setting aside a few minutes each day to practice gratitude. Regularly expressing gratitude can increase your happiness and improve overall well-being by shifting your focus from negative thoughts to reinforcing positive ones. Practicing gratitude can activate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and serotonin, which are chemicals that enhance mood and promote feelings of contentment.

✨After reading this post, take a moment to sit up straight. Simultaneously say out loud and write down three things you’re grateful for, focusing on the positive aspects of your life. This simple practice can help reinforce mindset shifts and keep you grounded in the present.

Show up as your authentic self, free from hate, blame, or comparison. Embrace the present, your quirks, flaws, and strengths, as they contribute to your unique adventure. Happiness is within your reach, and by adopting these mindsets and taking aligned action, you can cultivate a more joyful life.
